Bengaluru’s Hunt for a Second Airport: It’s Down to Two Locations in Kanakapura!

If you live in Bengaluru, you know the struggle: getting to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) can sometimes take longer than the actual flight itself. As the city continues to expand at a breakneck pace, the need for a second airport has shifted from a “luxury” to an absolute necessity.
Recent updates from the Karnataka government suggest that a major decision is just around the corner. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has officially confirmed that the race for the site of Bengaluru’s second airport has narrowed down to two specific locations in Kanakapura.
Here is everything you need to know about this massive infrastructure update.
Why a Second Airport?
Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli is currently the third busiest airport in India. While it is undergoing massive expansions (including the stunning Terminal 2), it is projected to reach its maximum structural capacity by 2033–2035.
To prevent a total logistics bottleneck, the state government is fast-tracking the development of a second terminal to handle the projected surge in passenger traffic and cargo movement.
The Kanakapura Frontrunners
While several locations across the outskirts of Bengaluru were initially considered—including Tumakuru Road, Hosur Road, and Sarjapur—the government has narrowed its focus.
According to D.K. Shivakumar, two sites in the Kanakapura Road area are currently the top contenders. This move is strategic for several reasons:
-
Geographical Balance: KIA is located in the far North. A second airport in the South/South-West (Kanakapura) would balance the city’s growth and serve residents in areas like Jayanagar, Banashankari, and Electronic City more efficiently.
-
Land Availability: The identified patches offer the vast acreage required for international-standard runways and terminals.
-
Connectivity: With the expansion of the NICE Road and upcoming Metro phases, Kanakapura is becoming increasingly accessible from the city center.
What Happens Next?
The selection process isn’t just about picking a spot on a map. The government is currently coordinating with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to conduct feasibility studies. They are evaluating:
-
Airspace clearance: Ensuring there is no interference with flight paths from the existing Devanahalli airport or the HAL airport.
-
Environmental impact: Assessing the ecological footprint on the surrounding greenery.
-
Passenger Connectivity: Planning how the new site will link to the suburban rail and Metro networks.
What This Means for Real Estate
Whenever a massive project like an international airport is announced, the local economy sees a massive boost. If Kanakapura is finalized, we can expect:
-
Property Value Surge: Land prices in Kanakapura, Harohalli, and surrounding areas are likely to skyrocket.
-
Infrastructure Boom: New flyovers, wider roads, and better public transport will follow the airport announcement.
-
Commercial Growth: Expect new hotels, tech parks, and warehouses to crop up in the South-Western corridor.
Final Thoughts
While the final decision between the two Kanakapura sites is still pending, one thing is clear: Bengaluru is preparing for its next phase of global evolution. A second airport will not only ease the burden on Devanahalli but will also redefine the city’s geography, making the “Garden City” even more connected to the world.
What do you think? Is Kanakapura the right choice for Bengaluru’s second airport, or should the government have looked elsewhere? Let us know in the comments!
